Entry for new person
Q: How do I add quotations by people who do not already exist on Famous Quotes?
- A : Add an entry for them to List of people by name, then click on the entry to create a new page for them. On the page, enter their name and occupation, and each of their quotes, both verified (with a source) and attributed (without). See the template for text you can copy and paste. After saving, add their name to the appropriate section or sections in List of people by occupation. You might also like to create a link [[q:Person Name]] on their article pointing back to their Famous Quotes page.
- Another way is to put a link on your user page, something like [[Person Name]], then previewing, clicking on the name, and editing. There is no need to even save your user page with that link! If you do that, however, be especially careful to add the person to categories, otherwise it will be completely orphaned.
Quotes found on the internet
Q: Is it acceptable to add quotes which you had come across on the internet and are relatively unattributed?
- A: Yes, those should be added under Anonymous, but it is suggested that you do a search of that quote to see if you can find who said it.
Quotes by your neighbour
Q: What about non-famous-quotes: my neighbour Rizwan says something profound; can I put it up here, crediting it to him?
- A: An official policy hasn't yet been formulated on this yet, but it would be OK to put these on your User page.
With traffic to the site recently increasing, and some users creating pages of apparently non-famous people the time has probably come to develop an official policy. In the coming week I intend to review many of the introductory pages to see if they can be streamlined with more useful information in guiding new users to log in and create a User page and a Talk page. I believe that quotations by non-famous people should be limited to these pages, and intend to propose this as an official policy. Other information about one's favorite quotations, themes, authors, pages, and such, and one's personal interests, and general assessments of things can be provided there as well. I haven't really set myself to the tasks of addressing policy formulation too much, other than reversing overt vandalism, and correcting plain errors, but intend to do a bit more review of existing pages in the coming week or two. I hope that some of the suggestions I am beginning to consider will be helpful, and more clear and definite policies can soon be developed. Currently the pages What Famous Quotes is not and the Village pump provide some information and new ideas are welcome. — Kalki (Talk) 12:36, 21 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Vandalism
Q: Is there a place within Famous Quotes to call attention to vandalism - and what can be done against it?
- A: When vandalism is obvious anyone can simply revert the edits that have been made by calling up the history of the article, clicking to edit the last version before the vandalism occurred, and saving that. If you believe that blocking, or other protective measures should be taken, you can notify a sysop on their talk pages. More information on possible responses exist in the Wikipedia article "Dealing with vandalism". Many of the procedures that have developed on the Wikipedia, will probably have to be adapted for use here, probably beginning with a Famous Quotes:Vandalism in progress page. ~ Kalki 18:40, 16 Oct 2004 (UTC) (I am a sysop: here is a link to my Talk page.)
- There is now a convenient link to the Vandalism in progress page, on the Recent Changes page. ~ Kalki 19:22, 16 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Abbreviations and shortcuts
Q: What do all those cryptic abbreviations, like VP and VFD, mean?
- A: Many Famous Quotes maintenance and operation pages have long descriptive titles, like Famous Quotes:Votes for deletion, so people often abbreviate them. Many of these abbreviations have handy shortcuts that can be typed into the Seach box to jump right to the page. A partial list of these shortcuts can be found at Famous Quotes:Shortcuts.
Misattributions
Q: I came across a quote popularly misattributed to person X in his page. Should I remove it?
- A: No, please! Add that quote to a section "Misattributed", and add any and all information you have regarding the history of the misattribution. Otherwise, someone else coming across the attribution somewhere else will add it again. This way, the page becomes a resource for what quotations are wrong, as well as right. Of course, this is only when dealing with a popular misattribution.
